WHAU RIVER BRIDGE

PROJECT NAME

Whau River Bridge

Value

$3,100,000

CLIENT

Transit New Zealand Limited

COMPLETION

1990

The Whau River bridge provides the Northwestern Motorway connection to the Te Atatu Peninsula and carries high volumes of traffic. Therefore, the programming of the contraflow was very important to the smooth running of the contract.

To construct the 1.5m diameter cylinder piles, a new system of fibreglass liner was used to replace the conventional method of jointed concrete pipes. The precast beams were lifted into place off the existing bridge, which required the closing of lanes between midnight and 6am on the morning of each operation.

The contract was completed three-and-a-half months ahead of schedule.
