MAINFREIGHT WELLINGTON

Dominion was also the main contractor for the construction of the new Mainfreight Freight Terminal in the Wellington Port Marshalling Yards.

The project consists of a 10,500m² freight terminal with a double railway corridor through the centre, and a raised 7500m² platform. Attached to the terminal is a two-storey office block with changing rooms, canteen facilities and varying office spaces. The site also includes a number of ancillary buildings and service areas around the truck access perimeter.

With construction on land leased from Kiwi Rail, the project team had the challenge of working within the confines of a live container terminal under strict Kiwi Rail safety parameters, co-ordinating the installation of both the building and the new rail tracks.

Client changes to the office design during construction and the installation of 11,000m² of pavement during some difficult winter conditions provided more challenges to overcome but the project was completed on time and within budget.
